California Engineering Contractors involvement in myriad civil projects has proven instrumental in shaping its success through the years, allowing for its steady growth and the awarding of increasingly complex projects — including the five-year (1999-2004), $175 million Bay Bridge Seismic Retrofit (West Span, from Yerba Buena Island to San Francisco).

The following projects, highlighted below, represent several of the largest and most complicated in their respective fields.




Completed one of the largest steel bridge retrofits in U.S history

San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge Project

  • Largest California Department of Transportation contract awarded at the time.
  • Removal of over 500,000 rivets
  • Installation of over 17,500,000 lbs. of structural steel
  • Installation of over 1,000,000 high strength bolts
  • Replacement of over 900 lateral braces
  • Complete retrofit of all four 525’ towers over live traffic
  • Installation of new cable bands and eyebars
  • Installation of 96 viscous dampers



Completed one of the largest bridge demolitions in U.S. history

Carquinez Bridge Demolition

  • Complete removal of the 1927 Steel Truss Balanced Cantilever Bridge.
  • Lowered two 700 ton suspended spans onto barges.
  • Removal of over 12,000 tons of concrete.
  • Engineered removal of 12,000 tons of structural steel.
  • The engineering and erection of 150’ high x 240’ long falsework that supported entire cantilever spans while the bridge was systematically removed.



Completed one of largest Polyester Concrete Overlays in U.S. history

Richmond/San Rafael Bridge Project

  • Completed 1,300,000 Sq. Ft. of Polyester Concrete Overlay in less than 60 days.
  • Over 700 expansion joints replaced.
  • Work was completed at night and the bridge lanes were completely opened to uninterrupted traffic on a daily basis.







Performing one of the largest bridge lead abatement/repainting projects on the west coast

Presidio Viaduct Project

  • Complete abrasive blast and recoating of over 375,000 Sq. Ft. of structural steel.
  • Structural steel retrofit of truss.
  • Work was performed over a National Park with environmentally sensitive areas and public access left undisturbed.
  • A major highway artery was maintained open at all times.




Completed the largest rail extensions in Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) history

Dublin Pleasanton/ Pittsburgh Antioch BART Extensions

  • New construction of two line extensions having a total of 19 miles of ballasted double track on concrete ties.
  • Constructed 7.5 miles of direct fixation track including 45 turnouts.
  • Construction of 22 turnouts installed in BART operating tracks.
  • Installed the largest BART slide-in extension with over 1,000 feet of track, 7 turnouts and 1 double crossover.
